History of American Sign Lanuguage
In 1960, William Stokoe, a hearing professor at Gallaudet University, in D.C. "published a dissertation that proved ASL is a genuine language with a unique syntax and grammar. ASL was henceforth recognized as a national language." Thomas Galleudet was the first person who brought ASL to the United States in 1917.
